Gomukh (Gaumukh) - The Source of The Bhagirathi River

Gomukh  or Gaumukh  or  Gomukhi  is the end or frown of the Gangotri Glacier and the wellspring of the Bhagirathi River, one of the essential headstreams of the Ganges River. The spot is arranged at a stature of 13,200 ft (4,023 m) in Uttarkashi locale in the province of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the biggest in the Himalayas with an expected volume of more than 27 cubic kilometers.

It is a prominent Hindu journey site, alongside Gangotri, just as trekking goal.  On 26 July 2016, after substantial rains in Uttarakhand, it was accounted for that the front finish of Gomukh was no more, as an enormous piece of the icy mass had fell and was washed away. In 2013, because of cloud burst in Uttarakhand, enormous breaks had risen on the icy mass. Gomukh mean to Cow in Hindi Gaw and Mukh means to mouth ( Mouth of a Cow). According to certain maxims, prior the nose precisely resembled the "Mouth of a Cow." Gomukh is referenced in the Puranas. It is said there that looking through a lost sheep a shepherd kid came to approach an ice sheet in Gangotri, the nose of which precisely resembled the mouth of a bovine, and subsequently it got its name 'Gomukh'. From that point numerous holy people, blessed explorers, just as strict individuals went there to adore the spot. Gomukh is 18 km from Gangotri in the foot slopes of Bhagirathi at a stature of 4255m. It is the nose of the Gangotri Glacier. The Bhagirathi waterway here is entirely rapid. Around the nose, nature displays a wild geography. There are stones dissipated to a great extent with certain bits of broken day off, with the hard clayey snow of the ice sheet. The Gomukh nose is quickly moving in reverse. As per the advanced research the nose has moved 1 km in only 70 years.
